Barcelona has a comfortable and efficient transport network. It has six metro lines covering nearly 86 kilometres, with 121 stations that make it easy to reach any part of the city.

The city also has an urban railway network run by the Catalan government, which complements the metro network with three additional lines.

The metro network operates from 5am until midnight, from Monday to Thursday and on Sundays and public holidays, and until 2am on Fridays. On Saturdays and the evenings before public holidays the metro runs all night.

A large fleet of city buses runs to all the city’s districts. Most buses are adapted to people with reduced mobility. Times and frequencies vary according to the route. The night bus (Nitbus) service operates from 10pm, departing from Plaça de Catalunya and covering the entire city.

There are different types of transport passes which are valid on the public transport network (metro, urban rail and buses) and provide access to several means of transport with the same ticket. There are 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-day passes which meet the needs of all users, and are better value than single tickets. The Barcelona Card is particularly good value for money, and includes free travel on public transport, as well as discounts and free admission to cultural and leisure attractions. Another option is the T-10 transport pass, valid for 10 journeys. All travel passes and season tickets can be purchased at the metro stations. Phone 010 for further information.

All suburban trains depart from Sants Station and connect the city with the towns in the metropolitan area. Other main stations are Plaça de Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia and Arc de Triomf. Trains run to the airport from here every 30 minutes. RENFE (Spanish rail): tel. 902 240 202 (national services), tel. 902 24 34 02 (international trains).

Barcelona has two bus stations. Buses depart from here to most cities in Spain as well as to some international destinations.

The Aerobús operates between Barcelona and the airport. Buses depart from Plaça de Catalunya every 12 minutes and call at different stops en route. The service operates daily from 5.30am to 12.15am.

Taxis are easily spotted by their distinctive yellow and black livery. There are a number of tele-taxi services. Many of them accept payment by credit card.
